NEW GENERATION TACHOGRAPHS CAUSE PROBLEMS IN MOTOR TRANSPORT

26 October
2023

"Smart" tachographs of the second version, which have recently been installed on new trucks, are a serious challenge for carriers. This was stated by the experts of Inelo and CORTE (an international organization that unites national authorities, transport associations and carriers and assists in the implementation of road transport policy in Europe) during the discussion of the problem.

This meeting took place in Bratislava at the headquarters of the ELA (European Labor Authority) - the European labor authority that oversees inspection services. Therefore, there is hope that the professional forum will not only be a discussion of theory, but will have real consequences.

First of all, experts talk about the availability of smart tachographs of the new generation. Transport companies may have difficulty acquiring new trucks or registering purchased trucks due to the lack of new smart tachographs on the market.

In addition, some countries have not adapted to the new rules related to the entry into force of the mandatory installation of new tachographs. Although Germany, for example, set a deadline of the end of the current year, which is already very close.

The situation is such that different EU countries will introduce tachographs at different times. That is, it is not clear how long-distance drivers will comply with the current rules in different countries of the EU single economic space.

"This scenario, of course, can change if the European Commission issues its guidelines on this issue," says Malgozata Pander, Inelo expert from Eurowag Group.

But this is not the end of the matter. It turned out, for example, that smart tachographs of the second generation do not record all the data on driver cards. Although these devices have obvious advantages. For example, the crossing of each state border is recorded automatically. And this means that the driver does not necessarily have to stop at crossing points. However, the real problem will be the presence of a card from a smart tachograph of the first generation. In this case, there will be no automatic display - you will have to stop and enter data manually.

In general, European regulations provide for the replacement of old analog tachographs or first-generation digital tachographs with d second version by the end of 2024. However, experts fear that everything will happen again at the last moment, which will cause many misunderstandings in the work of truck carriers.
