Yemeni Houthis have announced that they intend to limit attacks on ships in the Red Sea. They say they will only attack ships linked to Israel in the future.
According to the CTS, Interfax reports this with reference to AP.
It is noted that the Houthis sent letters with this content to shipping companies and others on January 19. AR reports that the Houthis may announce this officially on January 20.
Since the start of the current conflict between Israel and Hamas, the Houthis have attacked about 100 merchant ships with missiles and drones.
It was previously reported that attacks by Yemeni Houthis on ships in the Red Sea cost Egypt, which owns the Suez Canal, at least $7 billion in 2024.
It was predicted that the ceasefire in Gaza should theoretically pave the way for a diplomatic solution to the issue and influence the Houthis. There is hope that after a truce is reached between Hamas and Israel, shipowners may, at least partially, return to the Suez Canal route as early as 2025.
