During the meeting of the European Commission's Land Transport Committee on 18 December 2024, Member States agreed to introduce a two-month notification period, which will run from 1 January to 28 February 2025. The purpose of this period is to facilitate adaptation to the regulations regarding tachographs in vehicles engaged in international transportation.
Context and regulation
Regulation (EU) No. 165/2014 establishes that from December 31, 2024, all vehicles traveling between the member states of the European Union must be equipped with second-generation intelligent tachographs. However, the meeting highlighted the difficulties faced by certain countries due to problems in the supply chain of components needed to replace existing analogue and digital tachographs.
Transitional measures
To mitigate this situation, a transitional period has been established during which drivers using inappropriate tachographs will not be fined. Instead, they will be informed about the need to update their devices in accordance with the requirements of current regulations.
The term of application of sanctions
The grace period will end on February 28, 2025. From March 1, 2025, Member State authorities will be able to apply sanctions to vehicles that have not brought their tachographs up to the required standard.
The importance of adaptation
The transition to intelligent tachographs of the second generation not only ensures compliance with legislation, but also contributes to increasing road safety and optimizing the monitoring of international transportation. These advanced devices ensure greater accuracy in data recording and help combat fraud in the sector.
Recommendations for drivers and companies
Both transport companies and drivers must take urgent measures to replace tachographs before the deadline. The European Commission and national authorities have asked all parties involved to plan ahead to ensure compliance within the deadlines.
