The Danube Commission decided to terminate the Russian Federation's membership in the organization

22 December
2023

The decision was a response to missile and drone strikes on the Lower Danube.

Yesterday, December 14, at the 100th anniversary session chaired by Ukraine, the Danube Commission decided to terminate Russia's membership in the organization due to its missile and drone strikes on the Lower Danube, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba reported, writes CTS.

Russia must withdraw from the organization by February 29, 2024, or Commission members will no longer recognize their obligations to Russia under the founding Belgrade Convention.

"This decision is an appropriate response to the violation of the principles of free and safe navigation on the Danube. It is also based on the Commission's previous decision, adopted on March 17, 2022, to reject the credentials of the Russians, ban the Russians from participating in all meetings and dismiss the Russians from the Secretariat," - he added.

We will remind you that in March 2022, the Danube Commission at an extraordinary session decided to reject the authority of any representatives of the Russian Federation in the Danube Commission to restore peace, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.

And in June 2022, the Danube Commission dissolved the Preparatory Committee of the Diplomatic Conference on Revision of the Convention on the Navigation Regime on the Danube, to which Russia was also a member, and created the Preparatory Committee of the Diplomatic Conference on the Navigation Regime on the Danube, composed exclusively of the Danube states, without Russian representatives.
