The segment of the market of vessels with a capacity of 15 to 18 thousand TEU became the fastest growing over the past year.
In 2022, the world fleet of container carriers was replenished with 191 ships, its total capacity increased by 4% or by 1 million TEU, according to the Alphaliner analytical service.
At the same time, the share of operators' own tonnage in the structure of the world fleet increased significantly.
The number of chartered tonnage decreased by 198 vessels, their share in the total fleet by the number of vessels - from 50% to 45%.
This is due to operators' active investments in their own fleet during the corona crisis market boom, in particular, the purchase of vessels on the secondary market.
Only in three relatively small fleet segments, which together account for less than 14% of the total capacity, did the share of chartered tonnage continue to grow.
Moreover, the pace of this increase exceeded the increase in the total capacity and number of ships in the corresponding segment.
Thus, the fastest growing segment of the market over the past year was the segment of vessels with a capacity of 15 to 18 thousand TEU. Its number increased in 2022 by 19 vessels or 33%, of which 14 were vessels not owned by operators.
Similarly, the largest part of the increase fell on vessels that do not belong to operators - in the segments with a capacity of 10 to 12.5 thousand TEU and the smallest feeders with a capacity of 100 to 500 TEU.
Despite the sharp increase in demand for tonnage, which led to an accelerated increase in tonnage supply, four segments of the fleet did not grow over the past year - both the capacity and the number of vessels of medium capacity from 4 to 10 thousand TEU and feeders from 500 to 1000 remained at the same level as the year before TEU
