New progress on eFTI regulation

06 February
2025

The European Union has taken an important step towards modernising freight transport with the introduction of the Electronic Freight Transport Information (eFTI) Regulation. On 9 January 2025, the first set of implementing and delegated acts under the Regulation entered into force, providing Member States with the basis to start developing IT systems that will enable paperless freight operations across the EU.
The eFTI Regulation represents a transformative shift from paper documentation to standardised electronic data exchange across all modes of transport. By July 2027, secure, certified eFTI platforms will allow transport operators to seamlessly exchange standardised freight data with authorities and business partners. These platforms can be easily integrated into existing IT systems, creating a more efficient, transparent and sustainable freight sector. The exchange of digital information will reduce the administrative burden for transport operators and national authorities, improve data security and simplify compliance with both European and national freight transport rules.
Member States can now start setting up the necessary IT infrastructure to facilitate eFTI-compatible operations. Several key milestones will be achieved in the coming years to ensure a smooth transition:
• January 2025: Member States can start developing IT systems based on the specifications set out in the first eFTI acts. These systems will allow authorities to verify transport information.
• September 2025: The European Commission will adopt the remaining implementation specifications, which will describe the functional and technical requirements for eFTI platforms and service providers, as well as the certification rules.
• January 2026: eFTI platforms and service providers can prepare for operation. National authorities can start accepting data stored on certified eFTI platforms for verification.
• July 2027: The eFTI Regulation will enter into full application. Member State authorities will be required to accept electronic transport information submitted via certified platforms.
