The Japanese NYK will equip a bulk carrier with a wind power plant for the first time

25 July
2023

The initiative is part of NYK's long-term goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 for ocean-based businesses.

Japan's NYK will equip a bulk carrier chartered by Cargill with a wind power plant. This type of technology will be tested for the first time on a NYK Group vessel.

NYK's subsidiary NBAtlantic will handle the project.

The VentoFoil power plant is made by the Dutch company Econowind BV.

NBAtlantic will collect data on the thrust generated by the equipment, in addition to meteorological and ocean conditions during navigation, and measure the performance of the equipment.

The VentoFoil has a 16-meter vertical wing that acts as a sail. Like an airplane wing, it creates movement due to the pressure difference on both sides. VentoFoil is smaller in size than similar equipment, so it does not interfere with cargo handling. It is also easy to install and move.

This initiative is frequentanother of NYK's long-term goals of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 for NYK Group's ocean businesses.
